How to read the rain radar
Understand colors, movement, and what the precipitation radar shows.
A rain radar sends out electromagnetic waves and measures their reflections to detect precipitation in an area. The data is processed into a map where colors show rainfall intensity: lighter shades mean lighter rain, darker shades mean heavier rain.
Watch how colored areas move over time. Approaching darker bands often mean showers or thunderstorms heading your way. Radar works best for rain within a few hours; it complements longer-range forecast charts rather than replacing them.
